Citizens Deserve to Feel Safe from Gun Violence.
Every day on the news there is coverage over individuals who have been victims of gun violence and what we see is that progressively each year the United States continues to increase the number of cases related to gun violence. According to americanprogress.org There were more than 19,000 gun related homicides in 2020 that included 612 mass shootings (more than at least four people). There was also a surge in gun sales in 2020 where an estimated 200 million guns were sold. Our federal government has independently given each state the right to handle its own laws on background checks. The rules and restrictions on background checks applies to licensed gun dealers but many individuals are not licensed and therefore background checks are not provided, leaving a loophole in our system. This allows guns to land in the hands of individuals who may or may not be qualified to handle guns. The Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act of 2020 was introduced to the house in January of 2020 and targeted the federal framework that governs the sales, transfers, and possession of firearms and ammunition. On the 30th January it was introduced but it did not receive a vote. In recent years especially since 2019 statistical data informs us that there are more mass shootings happening then there are days of the year.
Does being in heavily populated areas make you
question your safety? Does being in heavily populated area cause you to think “what
if someone began shooting right now”? Do you worry when you go do basic normal
things like when you go to the movie theater or the mall or to school ,do you
worry that potentially someone is capable opening fire in a matter of seconds
with a machine gun? After dozens and dozens of mass shootings what is it going
to take for change to be initiated and why aren't more legislators in support of
stricter gun control in background checks? By reintroducing the HR.5717 bill, there
will be preventative measures and more control on gun ownership and
consequences. Vote on this bill to bring
back safety, and hope. Vote to brings communities a sense of safety. Vote to give
them a sense of reassurance that their children will be safe when they go to
school. Vote on the bill to provide people a sense of security.
